About the Alexander Technique

Learn to improve the quality of everything you do and change the habits that cause you pain with the Alexander Technique

We all have unconscious habits of movement. Without realizing it, we put undue pressure on our bodies. We use more force than we need to when lifting a coffee pot or a free weight. We slouch as we sit, unaware that our way of doing things may contribute to physiological problems.

We blame these body problems on various activities: carpal tunnel syndrome on computer work, tennis elbow on tennis or other activities with repetitive movement. But often it is how we do something that creates the problem, not the activity itself. As the saying goes, it’s not what you do – it’s how you do it.

The Alexander Technique is an intelligent way to address and solve body problems. Many people are mystified by their own back pain, excess tension or lack of coordination. They often see problems in their joints or muscles as structural, unchangeable. Alexander students often say things like, “I’ve always walked like a duck,” or “My posture is just like my father’s.”

But as students learn the Technique, they are surprised they really can make lasting changes in the way they walk, their degree of muscular tension, or in the shape of their posture. They learn how dynamic and changeable the body really is.

An Alexander Technique teacher helps you see what in your movement style contributes to your recurring difficulties – whether it’s a bad back, neck and shoulder pain, restricted breathing, perpetual fatigue, or limitations in performing a task or sport.

By analyzing your whole movement pattern – not just your symptoms – the teacher alerts you to harmful habits in your characteristic way of sitting, standing and walking. He then guides you – with words and a gentle, encouraging touch – to move in a freer, more integrated way.

Using the Alexander Technique, you can learn to strip away bad habits, heighten your self-awareness, and replace bad habits with more natural, efficient ones. You come to understand more about how your body works, and how to make it work for you to move more fluidly, release tension and enhance your comfort no matter what you do.

A student can be anyone – an athlete, a child, an arthritis sufferer, a homemaker, an executive.
